Acne

Acne is a prevalent dermatological ailment; as one of the most treated conditions at the Queensland Institute of Dermatology, our consultants are specialised in directing your care.

Acne Causes

While common in adolescents, acne can affect people of all ages. This chronic disorder targets the hair follicle and sebaceous (oil) gland, where white or blackheads break the skin surface after the follicle is blocked and inflamed. Acne presents as spots on the face, neck, back or chest, ranging from a few to significant severity with pustules and cysts that cause scarring.

While causes of acne are not entirely understood, the condition has been linked to:

  • Family History

  • Anabolic steroids used for muscular gain

  • Hormones produced by the body

  • Bacteria

Flares of acne can be caused by:

  • Polycystic ovarian disease

  • Drugs: Steroids, hormones, anticonvulsants and others (consults your dermatologist)

  • Oil-based cosmetics

  • High environmental humidity

  • Diet high in dairy products and high glycaemic foods

Acne Treatment

Often painful and mentally debilitating acne is treatable with each approach tailored to the specific patient. As a dermatologist can only prescribe some treatment options such as Isotretinoin (Roaccutane or Oratane), a consultation at the Queensland Institute of Dermatology is recommended.

A combination of treatment options is recommended. Some options we offer include:

  • Isotretinoin (trade names Roaccutane or Oratane, medication only prescribed by Dermatologists)

  • Topical antiacne agents

  • Antibiotics

  • Hormonal balancing in women such as oral contraceptives

  • Laser therapy (for acne scarring)

  • Chemical peels

All treatment options are in conjunction with a discussion of skincare plan.
