How To Leave A Bequest

Making a bequest in your will is an easy, rewarding process.

If you do not have a Will or a solicitor, visit your nearest Public Trustee to draft one.

HOW TO LEAVE A GIFT IN YOUR WILL

While there are many ways to leave a gift in your Will, the most common are:

A residuary gift; this amounts to whatever remains in your estate after your loved ones have been taken care of.
A pecuniary gift; this allows you to leave a fixed amount of money from your estate to the Queensland Institute of Dermatology.
A percentage; allows you to leave a nominated percentage of your estate to the Queensland Institute of Dermatology.

IMPORTANT STEPS

PLEASE TAKE THIS TO YOUR SOLICITOR for the inclusion of the bequest in your Will.

The words that you could use could be:

“I bequeath to the QLD Skin and Cancer Trust, for its exclusive use, (specific percentage of my estate), or (a specific sum), or (specified items), or (the residue of my estate), free of all duties, taxes or deductions, and a receipt from an authorised officer of the Queensland Institute of Dermatology shall be a complete and sufficient discharge of the Executor(s) for this bequest."

YOUR WILL MUST BE SIGNED IN THE PRESENCE OF TWO WITNESSES, WHO MUST ALSO SIGN IN THE PRESENCE OF EACH OTHER, but your solicitor will make all the necessary arrangements for you.

Codicil

CODICIL

A codicil is an amendment to your existing Will and becomes part of your Will.

Please take this form of Codicil to your solicitor who will discuss it with you and engross it into a Codicil which accords with all necessary legal requirements.

CODICIL of ____________________________________________________ (your full name and address)

This Codicil is dated_____(day) of ___________________(month) __________(year) in all respects except that I add the following clause: I give and bequeath, free of all duties taxes and deductions, the sum of $ _____________ or (specific percentage of my estate), or (specified items), or (the residue of my estate), to the QLD Skin and Cancer Trust for its general purposes. And I direct that a receipt from an authorised officer of the QLD Skin and Cancer Trust shall be a complete and sufficient discharge for the Executor(s) for this bequest.
